Houjie 后街
In the heart of China Town, four years ago, a Chinese restaurant opened offering truly tasty and nutritious cuisine. This is Houjie, specialized in the cuisine of Rui'an, a city-county located south-east of the province of Zheijiang (Wenzhou prefecture).
This city has the peculiarity of boasting a great variety of street food, articulated in its many streets. The intent of the owners of Houjie is precisely to propose the variety of Wenzhou street food, with some other curious and tasty dishes.
The restaurant is simply furnished and boasts eighty seats. The staff is kind and will not fail to give explanations about dishes and ingredients.
My attention, however, comes immediately from a lady sitting next to the kitchen, intent on preparing dozens of small dumplings all the same by hand. She tells me that these dumplings, served on the hot plate, are prepared with mixed vegetables and pork. It is a typical Wenzhou gem that is not long in ordering: they are nothing short of delicious, rich in taste and full of chives.
But grilled dumplings are not the only main dish of the house - not to mention that here all the dishes are fresh and freshly prepared. Leafing through the menu you will see numerous dishes called claypot, that is an earthenware cooking typical of Hong Kong. At the base of the claypot is rice, while several ingredients are arranged above. The most typical is based on Chinese bacon, peas and soy sauce: once the hot bowl is served to you at the table, the waiter will mix all the ingredients under your eyes in a triumph of inviting aromas and licks to lick the moustache.
Then we come to the third great specialty of Houijie, the grilled skewers (including squid tentacles, many types of cuts of meat - especially entrails) or fried (especially vegetables, tofu and mushrooms) served with a soy sauce.
Obviously there are numerous cold appetizers (such as cucumbers cut with a knife, duck or chicken boiled in a spicy sauce) and soups served in a clay pot.
Even the desserts reserve some curious surprises. In this case the protagonist is the sago (starch extracted from the marrow of the palm) served with grapefruit and mango, fresh and sweet, perfect for concluding a hearty meal like the one you will do here.
Whether for lunch or dinner, if not for a snack, Houijie is a really recommended place especially in the company - much more because it observes the continuous hours.
Located in a quiet street, Houijie gives you the opportunity to consume excellent Chinese street food sitting comfortably in a cozy environment. To this is added a very negligible price that will make you get satisfied and satisfied from the table.
