2020 was a year that put the restaurant world to the test, we know it very well. Many places have closed while other restaurateurs have used the opportunity to open new businesses instead. Among these stands out Hekfanchai, whose name is a bit difficult and which is all a program.
Translated as "eating young", Hekfanchai was born from the nostalgia for the typical Hong Kong dishes that were once eaten. The goal is precisely to make those sought-after flavors known to the Milanese.
Hong Kong is a city with a very particular history, which makes us understand why this type of cuisine is unique in its kind.
Since 1841 Hong Kong has been ruled by England for 200 years and this fact has led to a great contamination of Chinese cuisine with English: the resulting gastronomic style is very special, in fact it should not be surprising to find omelettes or French toast with a taste oriental on paper!
The dishes are all designed and approved by the chef of Kin Cheung, originally from Hong Kong, who has already distinguished himself in Milan at MU dimsum restaurant and for having obtained the prestigious international recognition of La Commanderie des Cordons Blue de France.
So, what do you eat at Hekfanchai? I absolutely recommend jaffle with beef at Satay (jaffle is a type of sandwich toasted in a special hot plate), french toast with taro cream and the mushrooms omelette, with a very soft and creamy texture. Also excellent are the cheung fun with prawns (steamed rice cannelloni) and desserts, of which I point out to try without thinking twice the pannacotta with azuki beans and the sago and coconut cakes.
Do not miss the Lemon Tea but above all the Hong Kong milk tea, handcrafted with a tea that last year won the competition of the best teas in Hong Kong.
The rest of the proposals are more inviting than the other, all perfect for sharing, both as a meal and as a snack. Among other things, at lunch you will find complete menu formulas at very affordable prices.
I found some dishes a little too sweet for my personal taste, but the choice is so vast that it is virtually impossible to be disappointed. In any case, the staff is very kind and prepared and will help you in the choice that best meets your needs by explaining all the dishes perfectly. Inside the restaurant you can order at the counter (behind which there is a part of the open kitchen) or directly from a special machine with touch screen and built-in cash box.
Hekfanchai was born mainly as a take away and delivery formula, the restaurant is located in the Loreto area and new openings with seating are already announced in order to better savor this cuisine on site. The packaging is very neat and the dishes will arrive at your home still warm - however they are all extremely easy to heat.
My final opinion is very positive and I can't wait to try other dishes!
